Weak second-order splitting schemes for Lagrangian Monte Carlo particle methods for the composition PDF/FDF transport equations

چکیده
We study a class of methods for the numerical solution of the system of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) that arises in the modeling of turbulent combustion, specifically in the Monte Carlo particle method for the solution of the model equations for the composition probability density function (PDF) and the filtered density function (FDF). This system consists of an SDE for particle position and a random differential equation for particle composition. The numerical methods considered advance the solution in time with (weak) second-order accuracy with respect to the time step size. The four primary contributions of the paper are: (i) establishing that the coefficients in the particle equations can be frozen at the mid-time (while preserving second-order accuracy), (ii) examining the performance of three existing schemes for integrating the SDEs, (iii) developing and evaluating different splitting schemes (which treat particle motion, reaction and mixing on different sub-steps), and (iv) developing the method of manufactured solutions (MMS) to assess the convergence of Monte Carlo particle methods. Tests using MMS confirm the second-order accuracy of the schemes. In general, the use of frozen coefficients reduces the numerical errors. Otherwise no significant differences are observed in the performance of the different SDE schemes and splitting schemes. 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Multi-Environment Probability Density Function Method for Modeling Turbulent Combustion Using Detailed Chemistry
One of the most important issues to address in turbulent combustion calculations is the intense nonlinear interaction between fluid mixing and finite-rate chemistry. In combustion processes which are characterized by fast chemistry, use of the flamelet model (Peter, 1984) or conditional moment closure (CMC) (Bilger, 1993) based on a conserved scalar is known to be quite accurate in making quali...
متن کاملMoving Weight Galerkin Methods forTurbulent Reactive
Adopting a statistical approach for the computation of turbulent combustion ows an approximation for the probability density function (PDF) of the composition variables is often required to treat the highly non-linear reaction term in a satisfactory way. One class of methods currently being used are the moment methods which employ transport equations for low order statistical moments and use a ...
متن کاملApplication of PDF methods to compressible turbulent flows
A particle method applying the probability density function ~PDF! approach to turbulent compressible flows is presented. The method is applied to several turbulent flows, including the compressible mixing layer, and good agreement is obtained with experimental data. The PDF equation is solved using a Lagrangian/Monte Carlo method. To accurately account for the effects of compressibility on the ...

A particle method applying the probability density function ~PDF! approach to turbulent compressible reacting flows is presented. The method is applied to low and high Mach number reacting plane mixing layers. Good agreement is obtained between the model calculations and the available experimental data. The PDF equation is solved using a Lagrangian Monte Carlo method. To represent the effects o...
متن کاملAnalysis of splitting methods for reaction-diffusion problems using stochastic calculus
We consider linear and nonlinear reaction-diffusion problems, and their time discretization by splitting methods. We give probabilistic interpretations of the splitting schemes, and show how these representations allow us to give error bounds for the deterministic propagator under weak hypothesis on the reaction part. To show these results, we only use the Itô formula, and basic properties of s...
